Chapter 12

Y

The weekend passed uneventfully. The steady parade of thrill seekers slowed to a trickle, and sales picked up. I fielded several calls from frantic artists and two from my mother, who’d heard about the murder on the news in Denver and lamented about what was happening to Paradise. On Saturday afternoon, I took a chance and drove out to the construction site in the hollow. Luckily, Felicity’s foreman was there and willing, sort of, to talk to me. He couldn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know, but he confirmed the theory that Greentree seemed to have inside information.

By Monday, I was ready for a normal day — whatever that was. It had been almost a week since Felicity’s murder. Six days since I’d last seen Jawarski. We don’t go out all that often, but I usually see him on the street at least once in the space of a week. His silence was becoming deafening, but I refused to let myself wig out about it.

Luckily, I’d ordered the supplies to change the store’s display window before Bea went peppermint crazy, and I’d 124

put off updating the display long enough. Between preparations for the festival and working on the display window, Karen and I had plenty to keep us busy all day.

I’d planned a spring scene for the window this time, complete with a red wagon made from white chocolate sprayed red and filled with an assortment of pastel-colored candy, grass made of pieces of green apple licorice rope attached to toothpick halves, a chocolate baseball mitt holding a white chocolate baseball, and candy flowers around the perimeter.

While I cut blades of licorice grass and Karen attached them, I filled her in on my conversation with Ursula, my suspicions about Oliver’s near accident, and Jacqueline’s claims that Oliver had married Felicity for her money.

“So someone really tampered with Oliver’s brakes?”

she asked when I finished talking.

“Apparently so.”

“And nobody knows who?”

“I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t have a clue.”

Karen whistled softly. “So somebody killed Felicity and tried to kill Oliver at the same time. Why?”

“That’s the million dollar question,” I said, reaching once again for my kitchen shears. “Both Ursula and Jacqueline insist that Oliver inherits everything, but I’d like to know what would have happened if he’d died the same night Felicity did.”

“I can talk to Sergio,” Karen offered. “I don’t think his firm represented Felicity, but I’m sure he knows who did.

He might be able to find out the terms of her will.”

I couldn’t imagine Karen’s husband agreeing, but all he could do was tell us no. “If you think he’d be willing,” I said, “go ahead and ask.”

“Oh, honey, he gets so bored handling property dis-putes, he’ll probably jump at the chance to do something interesting.”
